Magda's Pretend Masa

Non-toxic recipe for hands-on tortilla-making fun to complement     MAGDA'S TORTILLAS - LAS TORTILLAS DE MAGDA

 Storage tip:

 This masa is non-toxic and inexpensive to make.  Store it in the fridge and it will last for many months!

        INGREDIENTS

     1 cup all-purpose flour

bullet

     1 cup water

bullet

     1 tablespoon cooking oil

bullet

    1/2 cup salt

bullet

     2 teaspoons cream of tartar

bullet

     food coloring optional

EQUIPMENT:  wooden spoon, medium-sized pot

 Directions

 Remember:  Have a grown-up help you in the kitchen, have fun and DO clean up!.

  

 1.  Combine everything in the pot.

2.  Stir constantly over medium heat.  Mixture will solidify all of a sudden!

    Keep stirring until it becomes a mass.  Turn off heat.

3.  Place the dough on a clean counter to cool.

4.  Then, knead the dough until it is silky smooth. Your pretend masa is ready!

5.  On a clean work surface, shape it, roll it, cut it -- make pretend tortillas a la Magda!

Teach colors - Use food coloring to create batches of red, yellow, green and blue masa. 

Playing restaurant, have the children make menus and take food orders.  "Cooks" prepare

orders for an array of dishes featuring tortillas.

Blue tortillas made of blue corn.  Yellow tortillas made of yellow corn.  Red and Green masa

makes red or green enchiladas.

Teach shapes - Create round, square, rectangular, oval, triangular and other shapes. 

Allow kids to manipulate the masa by hand, or to roll the dough and trace/cut out their shapes.
