Becky Chavarría-Cháirez is a Latina author, writer, veteran broadcast journalist and playwright whose stories are featured  in the fully bilingual, children's picture book series published by Piñata Books, the children's imprint of Arte Público Press, the nation's oldest and largest publisher of US Hispanic Literature.

The award-winning cultural commentator and writer has assumed a new creative voice in support of her personal mission to write for and about Latino children, who are no longer an unrecognized minority but a vital majority of youngsters who indeed are our future. Becky Chavarría-Chairez delights audiences with her stories which blend cross-cultural experiences and promote language -- bringing literary and cultural enhancement to schools, libraries as well as thrilling ESL-, dual- and Spanish-language teachers!

A Writer on a MAGDA-nificent Mission

Motherhood has its challenges and unexpected rewards. After having two children of her own and finding herself challenged to find multi-lingual, multi-cultural books for her children, this Latina writer gave birth to a new literary voice for young readers.  Critics, educators and fans of all ages delight in her professional and literary efforts to bring awareness, understanding and appreciation for Latino life & culture in the U.S.

About Becky & Magda

Magda and la familia Madrigal come to life in the author's readings of her bilingual children's picture books.  A native Spanish speaker, Becky makes the experience doubly as rich and twice as fun!  The veteran broadcast news journalist and  advocate of multiculturalism creates an authentic and  memorable showcase -- in English and Spanish -- featuring the characters' voices and many personalities!  Let Magda entertain and enlighten your young audience as well as the young at heart!  Magda's Tortillas is now presented on stage at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio, the author's hometown!

A Career Communicator

Becky is a career communicator and "seasoned" writer.  One of the first Latinas to venture into broadcasting, she began her professional career in Top 40 radio and public affairs programming soon after celebrating her nineteenth birthday.  Hired partly because she had no "Spanish" accent -- although Spanish was her first language-- she was adamant about keeping and using her not-so-common, nor easy-to-pronounce surname.

An avid multi- & cross-culturalist, Becky is passionate about Pan-Hispanic culture and languages.  An award-winning radio commentator, cultural critic and opinion/editorial writer, her work has been featured in several major US newspapers, magazines and periodicals including Atlanta Journal Constitution, Hispanic Magazine, San Antonio Express-News, San Francisco Chronicle among others.  She is a former regular columnist with the Dallas Business Journal, Dallas Morning News, National Business News, WE: Women's Enterprise Her expertise in Hispanic and general market broadcast and print media, public & media relations.  She has interviewed prominent political leaders, numerous authors, celebrities and personalities from all walks of life.

Currently, she is working on several projects, including her memoirs, an anthology of her literary work,  and, of course, more children's book manuscripts.
